Lime has been used historically for thousands of years and covers a wide range of applications. It is important when working with natural stone to use lime for many reasons: it allows the building to 'breathe' without the ingress of water; as it is sacrificial to the stone is provides longevity to the masonry; it can be used as an exterior coating in the form of lime harling or a natural pigment lime wash which is another means of defense against the elements; in the case of lime harling this can provide an extended lease of life to decaying masonry.
